<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Last month we were able to have my mother-in-law Bethel here with us for the better part of a week, celebrating her 97th birthday and Mothers Day. We had a lot of fun doing various things. I took her with me to a Ladies Night Out at our church, where we enjoyed a great dinner served by our men, and a comedian to entertain us. We attended a musical at our local Lutheran School, which we all enjoyed.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We drove to Prineville to a local nursery and enjoyed the flowers while we bought a few baskets I had previously ordered. We enjoyed lunch at McDonalds and it made a fun trip.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">One day she and I babysat for some friends who are foster parents. Mom had a good time playing with 'sweet pea' as we call her.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It is always a good time when we can be together. She is one amazing woman to be so active at her age. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We are on our way over to her house this week-end. We are taking her to Ontario tomorrow which is where she was raised. We will be visiting four of her cousins and we are having lunch with them in a favorite restaurant. We are also going to the cemetery there to see the gravestone that was recently placed for my father-in-law. We will lay some flowers, and she will get to see it for the first time. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I am sure we are going to have another good time together....that's what families do!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">Have a great first day of Summer, 2019!</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We enjoyed a great Father's Day.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We enjoyed a good Sunday morning at Church, followed by a great barbeque at home on the deck...with hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and buns with all the fixin's, homemade potato salad and wonderful fruit salad which starred a great, sweet watermelon.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The father in the house relaxed in his recliner and watched the end of the US Open Championship. Following that, we took short naps, then grabbed our tennis shoes for a hike along the Deschutes River Trail south. This is less than a mile away from the house, and we are so blessed.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is such a beautiful, and clean river which affords great sights. Some of the trail looks like this, with the river being calm and peaceful. Lots of lodge pole pines line the river bank.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">At the end of the trail is a bridge to cross to other side and hike back to the beginning and see the river from the other side. This trail is well used with walkers, runners, and mountain bikers (allowed on part of the trail) as well as dog walkers. One thing we particularly like is that it feels like a wilderness area, but is only literally minutes away from the city of Bend on both sides. Beauty in exercising....that's the ticket.</span></div>

It is calm, peaceful and flat. Sometimes I go with her, and this is where I was introduced to Chester the Canadian goose. Chester is a lonely sort of widower goose, who has lost his mate. He strangely is attracted to one particular grave marker, and as you can see he stands on it, lays on it, and peacefully rests beside it. He also likes to stand on the mausoleum rooftop to get a better view of things.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwYzBz7lTZ0dV_ZpfXaAMV6kVJAWUyzUq73gG4qaiU1lraO6OiI9FnN9xRhdMUBCf5eO85jGambycNXSR9qbAypuY9pthyGxnt2ONcmq5U3fnqZQ-jFguMRX9UoC91C7L-iv3M0Cq64t9H/s1600/thumbnail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwYzBz7lTZ0dV_ZpfXaAMV6kVJAWUyzUq73gG4qaiU1lraO6OiI9FnN9xRhdMUBCf5eO85jGambycNXSR9qbAypuY9pthyGxnt2ONcmq5U3fnqZQ-jFguMRX9UoC91C7L-iv3M0Cq64t9H/s320/thumbnail.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Chester only likes to come to the cemetery in the cool of the day, as he doesn't much care for heat it seems. Of course, he also is not keen on winter snow or ice either. So it takes a rather temperate day to find him hanging out at his regular venues. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">One day a girl goose came and tried to attract his attention. She tried EVERYTHING, but Chester was as cool as a cucumber. You see when Chester lost his mate, he lost his mate for life. So he ignored the whole show, and eventually she left him alone, just the way he likes it. Chester agrees with JoAnn and I that Pilot Butte Cemetery is just right for a beautiful, wonderful place to be alone and quiet. I do wonder though, just what it is that attracts him to that particular grave stone. He certainly has laid dibs on it!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> One last post about my 'spring' garden. I have been busy traveling, and when I got home I was exited to find that my little garden had fully developed. So, there are two kinds of daffodils, peach tulips and the blue muscari. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">We were in Burns for Easter where we visited my mother in law, my sister and brother in law, and two couples that we haven't seen in over 30 years. We had a lovely time at church and a great ham dinner after that. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Next, I went to Boise, Idaho with my sister in law for a week. We stayed with my niece Deana and her caregivers. Deana has had MS for many years and needs constant care. Her husband takes a vacation/break a couple times a year, and my sister in law comes to help out. We had an absolutely lovely time, and I had a vacation to boot. It is always good to see Deana and spend some time with her. During the days my sister in law and I spent time with other friends, had some nice lunches out and did some shopping. Then we came back to Deana's in the afternoon and spent the evening until she was ready for the night. On Sunday we accompanied a friend to her Catholic Church and attended Mass. I had done that once before in college, but this was a large and interesting service.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is exactly how I feel when I am outside in my yard and/or garden. Then sings my soul to Thee, O God, in praise for the works of Thine hands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYs1pn7UV_Gpf5ClNI3L9LuEQWxdOCj8e9DroeRv7wMQU4ZWD6OybVjoKAX4kf-CtpKlU1a-jJJM4m6qvtwBF8fVQXdgVXkZIGGqzW5msQyrVDBPjqfN3JXE_gJHOfK1h6WsrvcVEKv6Is/s1600/April+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYs1pn7UV_Gpf5ClNI3L9LuEQWxdOCj8e9DroeRv7wMQU4ZWD6OybVjoKAX4kf-CtpKlU1a-jJJM4m6qvtwBF8fVQXdgVXkZIGGqzW5msQyrVDBPjqfN3JXE_gJHOfK1h6WsrvcVEKv6Is/s320/April+002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have been outside off and on for the past three weeks, and it has felt so good. This bed has now popped up, and will be a mix of daffodils first, tulips second, and muscari (wild grape hyacinth) last. I can't wait! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ85GNBtgPlU5I7lT69_W8pBC79p00T3107d97GjABPkfB0htMGl0pNYylMZEMgPPNfiKsBNTrtbETSStlPGg_F9BrbqnAF1LAunAByrr0Cb7PXQPsSGeNmok-7vBlQgJr2pl3Ql9pUCMD/s1600/April+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ85GNBtgPlU5I7lT69_W8pBC79p00T3107d97GjABPkfB0htMGl0pNYylMZEMgPPNfiKsBNTrtbETSStlPGg_F9BrbqnAF1LAunAByrr0Cb7PXQPsSGeNmok-7vBlQgJr2pl3Ql9pUCMD/s320/April+001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One thing we can do over here is grow large crocus, and they are in full bloom now and thank goodness for the colors, as the rest of Central Oregon is pretty well brown. But just working in the dirt, and cleaning away debris is fulfilling.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have chosen a word this year to work on in my life. The word is 'authentic'. I want to be truly known, and truly know others. I want to be who God created me to be. It has helped me so much just to relax, and not worry what anyone else thinks or if they like me or not. My whole perspective is lighter and happier. I am an authentic flower gardener. It took me years of growing various vegetables to find this out, because everyone else thought vegetable gardening was 'serious' gardening. But now I have found my true delight, in growing beautiful flowers, and basically flowers only. It is hard here. People in the Willamette Valley or Treasure Valley would just laugh at what I call 'my garden'. But I don't care. Not anymore. It's what makes me happy and healthy and brings a little patch of beauty to our Central Oregon landscape. There are various ways of great beauty here: tall old growth cedars and ponderosa pines against a majestic blue sky, wildflowers along the Metolius River in June and a wide sky as far as the eye can see. But not so many flowers. And so I garden and go to sleep at night happy.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There are at least a couple of blooms out there to see. First crocuses.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But the rest of the garden beds look like this:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just had to get out there and do something though, so I cleaned out two beds.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This one has a lot of spring flowering bulbs just coming up. (Stay posted)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I helped them by uncovering them to the sun, a good spring thing to do.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And this one is empty, ready for the dahlias we will plant in May.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Both beds were covered with pine needles, pine boughs, pine cones, pine cone skeletons and pine cone leaves in a thick layer. I think eating the cones has been the way our squirrels have survived the recent storms. Just wish they wouldn't throw their remains down on my garden!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Someday we will have green again and lovely blooms. Dreaming of spring over here in Central Oregon!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">March 12, 1946... the day my parents were married. A newly returned Air Corp soldier from the Pacific Theater of WW II, married a shy high school graduate from Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, Washington.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This morning I grabbed a cup of coffee and a small tape recorder and tape and listened to my Dad tell about his war adventures and then meeting my mom and getting married on this day 73 years ago. It was great to have a 'visit' with Dad and hear his voice once again. They were both present, and together they said "March 12" and then Dad repeated 1946. A special day in our family for sure.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">A quick update on our trip to the Willamette Valley. We had a great time reconnecting with family for sure, and remembering the life of a wonderful woman of God. But seeing spring blooms? No way. It was cold, raw and muddy. I did see a patch of daffodils where the stalks were above ground, but quite a ways from blooming. Guess Oregon spring is still mulling over making an entrance, while winter still has a firm grasp on things. The good thing is that we know it's coming. It has always come, and the signs of spring will once again show the hope of resurrection.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, March did come in like a lion, more like a pack of lions. We have lived here for over 30 years, and I have never seen such a late series of winter storms. Let me be clear, I LOVE snow. I can never usually get enough of it. But these last weeks, even I cringed to wake up to more grey gloomy skies letting go of yet more snow flakes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNabJQtx5L0gOBjFtUpUGMzGzOaNrXR6iVkQ5O_rmKm2aXVpJ0wbML1ahDLASzmxG8gInYsdhFq93jgeLJ9Mq-r-9Kx2AfjCDrVrsg2Laq75qwfuZK5wIwmgKNM34PV6e0JAmQBpPCW2K/s1600/2019+Mar+Snow+%25234.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNabJQtx5L0gOBjFtUpUGMzGzOaNrXR6iVkQ5O_rmKm2aXVpJ0wbML1ahDLASzmxG8gInYsdhFq93jgeLJ9Mq-r-9Kx2AfjCDrVrsg2Laq75qwfuZK5wIwmgKNM34PV6e0JAmQBpPCW2K/s320/2019+Mar+Snow+%25234.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have been in a frozen pocket of gray freezing fog for two weeks, plus the snow. Cold temperatures, that I think the lowest was 4 degrees, and the usual highs were under 20 degrees. We got an initial dump of 3 feet of snow at once, then it added up over days to 4 1/2 feet or so at our house. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgrKjj3XLIXX7YkaiNs_6MdYBG7DuBo0R4Q5I_SPPcwNEwO31Ckickj9eEPyX8tgeaapylMOJ54SIQ371ePaf0QJYCKsgCZQ56gE_I7kdblRRlZNl_tvr0cdcWF2RquP7vWVFF_6UWzggD/s1600/2019+Mar+Snow+%25235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgrKjj3XLIXX7YkaiNs_6MdYBG7DuBo0R4Q5I_SPPcwNEwO31Ckickj9eEPyX8tgeaapylMOJ54SIQ371ePaf0QJYCKsgCZQ56gE_I7kdblRRlZNl_tvr0cdcWF2RquP7vWVFF_6UWzggD/s320/2019+Mar+Snow+%25235.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh for childhood, when we had no responsibility for the snow, just the fun. People struggled all over town, to shovel or snow blow homes and businesses, and later to get snow off roofs and chip away ice dams. Let alone just drive anywhere. Schools were down all week and many businesses for at least two days or more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgslAa5_R15DD_y1KxnabsVoil-LQK7t1oHc2WAnKwOxzLlHV0ZRjMeU9urk7Q7CgvVaLaPso95cA3USzFYYABHHZlJpX0fOZT57gyyJMQwOw0V7PP1ot7Bp3NOpIgxXsX52o7BZb7ebtms/s1600/2019+Mar+Snow+%25236.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgslAa5_R15DD_y1KxnabsVoil-LQK7t1oHc2WAnKwOxzLlHV0ZRjMeU9urk7Q7CgvVaLaPso95cA3USzFYYABHHZlJpX0fOZT57gyyJMQwOw0V7PP1ot7Bp3NOpIgxXsX52o7BZb7ebtms/s320/2019+Mar+Snow+%25236.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Even I, snow lover that I am, got down and tired of all the struggle. The insurance man was out every day shoveling, and caught a bronchial bug that he tried to ignore, but managed to share with me. I think if this had happened in December, deep winter, like it's supposed to, it wouldn't have been quite so bad. But my daffies, tulips and crocuses had already broken ground and I was looking forward to a bit of spring bloom. Who knows when all this ice will melt and we will see ground again? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNsiHlgHeZ_0baykn0XdyD-0SSmPb5rBMHiUdaEwLzajIx82G8VtkoITogtAxZIfRQkrnp_L3kaes71DkWbi_oUUw_GjCB79xI3xkkJOgCMVMuCrIWuANZ_4YAHD_CLvUVBSdbiFQzr0c0/s1600/2019+Feb+Daffodils+on+the+coast%252C+snow+everywhere+else.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNsiHlgHeZ_0baykn0XdyD-0SSmPb5rBMHiUdaEwLzajIx82G8VtkoITogtAxZIfRQkrnp_L3kaes71DkWbi_oUUw_GjCB79xI3xkkJOgCMVMuCrIWuANZ_4YAHD_CLvUVBSdbiFQzr0c0/s320/2019+Feb+Daffodils+on+the+coast%252C+snow+everywhere+else.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I write this, at least the cold and fog have lifted, and we are seeing sunshine and blue skies. What a treasure that is. Hope once again for rebirth and springtime. We are also headed over the mountain pass (feet upon feet of snow) for a memorial service, and should see some blooms in the Willamette Valley. I snapped this photo two weeks ago, on the Oregon Coast, to reassure myself that spring blooms do still exist somewhere.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I keep a bulletin board of old Valentines up all year long beside my desk. They are so perky and cheerful and full of inspiration to me. They are mostly from the 1930's and 1940's. </div>

There are a few older ones, that are full of grace and charm and are extraordinary. This card has 3 fold-outs and a base to stand up on.There are roses, forget-me-knots and lilly of the valley. It is almost 4-D. I love this Valentine.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mother-in-law has kept her school days Valentines all these years. She says she and her younger sister used to play with them on rainy or sick days. She still gets them out and remembers...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my school days of the 1950's and 1960's, the Valentines had lost so much. So much meaning, so much color, so much size. We were required to bring one for everyone in our class, and so Valentines were sold in boxes cheaply for people to afford. That explains a lot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the days of my 3 daughters growing up, Valentines were even smaller and almost meaningless. The girls gave Valentines with Strawberry Shortcake, Care Bears, My Little Pony or Precious Moments on them (just what boys want), and the boys had G I Joe, Star Wars or Super Heroes Valentines (just what girls want). Here are a few photos of a pack from Precious Moments I got at our Christian bookstore for $1.99 back in the early 80's. They are cute but inane, and don't say anything worth saying. They are just <b>little</b> square cards you fold in half and put someone's name on. But somehow the girls still had fun doing it and addressing them. Now days it is my granddaughters giving Valentines with Shopkins on them for $5 a pack. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is another example of the quality of vintage things that are worth having, and the diminishing quality and higher prices of today.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Today I was blessed to find this cross. JoAnn has taken to walking in a local cemetery and enjoying the peace and tranquility. She asked me to join her there on her walk, and she took me over to a grassy knoll where this cross has stood since 1934. Two Friars are buried on the knoll, and their friends erected this cross in their memory. Beautiful work on the cement cross, and the circle in the middle includes a 'Christogram' (ihs) which stands for the name of Jesus Christ in Greek. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Such a beautiful November day, and a beautiful spot and memorial.</span></div>

Kory and Maggie snuggled skin to skin for a couple of hours before they took her to clean her up and weigh her. She weighed 8 lbs even, and was 20 inches long.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Well, it's been since December that I have posted on this blog of ours. And now it's March...but I have some big news today. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Our granddaughter Kory has gone into labor, and is in the hospital waiting to give birth to our first great granddaughter. Our daughter Joy has arrived, and now the waiting continues as baby girl makes her way out into this big, wide world. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Above is a photo of Kory at her baby shower a few weeks ago, and the other is a photo of baby bump. Such a cute pregnant lady, teacher, momma-to-be, wife, daughter and granddaughter!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">More photos to come......</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4726509511902928852.post-71581150444316975432017-12-22T14:04:00.000-08:002017-12-22T14:04:48.787-08:00First Snowfall<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have had an extremely dry summer and autumn and beginning of winter. Lately it has been crisp and cold with sunny clear skies. Beautiful days, with no sign of a cloud. But I have been growing restive for some white snowflakes to make their appearance. Then this week, the weatherman said <u>yes</u>, it was going to happen! So....I have been going about my business, getting exited for that first glimpse.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEXH_cZcShmIVLtaaDilglugisiQ17i839dei2eY-vRlkab8RAgFRAK5AH7xgcjsGVMIOWtGxVMyZ0TmgYQZoaNexQN0GMbqakcPfOL3ux80HXKYJXmZ9KkfkL3ITUUlChgD4XZEOkXtug/s1600/8dac10baf36c1ff61c03384b11fb6b24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="427" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEXH_cZcShmIVLtaaDilglugisiQ17i839dei2eY-vRlkab8RAgFRAK5AH7xgcjsGVMIOWtGxVMyZ0TmgYQZoaNexQN0GMbqakcPfOL3ux80HXKYJXmZ9KkfkL3ITUUlChgD4XZEOkXtug/s320/8dac10baf36c1ff61c03384b11fb6b24.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally we saw the first fat white downy flakes falling on Wednesday morning. Not at night, while we were blissfully snoring our way through a winters sleep, but in the morning when we woke up so that we could see and enjoy it! Not a lot, just several hours of lightly falling snowflakes, coating the grass with a thin cover that would melt at the hint of a sunbeam. But enough for now. Enough to make me feel like Wednesday was a magical morning, a special time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNbEGDmYm1tjXTV-ySdKHO6I9purpQ9UZ8OFNMDiuJ-r4155To0WazkxwJqrQaq9xZyyQzItrpuaOCJYEYgCh1RGFIjMWUhD5YuXmKkjwzZ9mMl1RKQI7cL_wufwcbzVH-GGS9yeT3n0E/s1600/DSC02161.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNbEGDmYm1tjXTV-ySdKHO6I9purpQ9UZ8OFNMDiuJ-r4155To0WazkxwJqrQaq9xZyyQzItrpuaOCJYEYgCh1RGFIjMWUhD5YuXmKkjwzZ9mMl1RKQI7cL_wufwcbzVH-GGS9yeT3n0E/s320/DSC02161.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then the sun came out, and shone on everything and everyone. And it was beautiful. And now the weatherman says it will really snow on Christmas day....how about that for timing! But it won't be the first snowfall, not quite the same.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I will leave you with this poem by James Russell Lowell. Get a handkerchief ready...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Fun with Piano Students</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After school one day in December, we had an impromptu 'tea' only with hot chocolate and molasses sugar cookies. This is Abby and Emily, and their Mom Carol and I are sipping out of sight of the camera, and keeping warm in front on the fire. Brrr- it's been cold for a couple of weeks now.</div>

Here is another group of students, and the one with the guitar is Shayli, then Brinnay and Ella in the green Christmas t-shirt, along with Mom Kindi. I have known Kindi since she was Ella's age, so it is so much fun to teach her girls. The home school in the kitchen while each has a piano lesson.</div>

JoAnn has been busy baking up a storm, and made some very beautiful sugar cookies that were a work of art!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
JoAnn and I had a fun time too, decorating the tree this year. We had purchased a few new trims and I sat and got the ornaments ready for her then she put them on the tree. What a great idea! I was happy to be sitting, and she was happy having control of the placement. Christmas music was playing and a plate of cookies was nearby for the hungry (that's us)!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, we have done some fun things in December this year. Tonight we are going out to dinner with 3 dear friends and have a special Christmas dinner together. Then on Saturday is our Church Ladies Christmas Brunch and I am going with a friend and looking forward to it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then of course I am fitting it the baking and Christmas cards as time allows. So nice to spend these days preparing my heart and home for the coming of the Savior!</div>

Last spring I posted some spring baby animal photos I had collected from Pinterest. I decided today to post some of my favorite winter animal scenes, collected from Pinterest as well. It is fun to see the critters out in the midst of a cold snowy winter in their natural environment. The photographers do such an amazing job of capturing these animals so close and quirky, fun and beautiful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Enjoy!</div>

This was the month we got our piano tuned. I took the opportunity to take photos of the interior. It is so pretty inside. This old upright was made before 1885, by the Franklin Piano Company. My great-grandparents purchased it for my Great Aunt Minnie. She brought it with her from Iowa to Oregon, then Seattle by train. She taught piano with it for many many years until her arthritis was too severe. She gave it to my parents so I could learn on it, a wonderful gift! Now it resides in Bend, Oregon and I have continued the tradition and teach on it. So many years of wonderful pleasure I have received.</div>

This is behind the bottom panel, with the sound board in the back. The funny black box is a humidifier, that I have to water every few weeks. We live where there is virtually no humidity, so to keep the piano and wood moist this is the solution.</div>

And finally, today is the day before Thanksgiving. I love the peace and fun of this day. Mom is here with us, and she and I are working on a few Christmas projects this morning. First experimenting with selfies. She is 95 and knows what a selfie is and how to take one. Wow!</div>

I love to find seasonal photos on Pinterest and save them. I put them on my computer screen as wall paper, and then rotate them every few minutes to enjoy the scenes. I thought I would share a few of my mid-to-end of Autumn photos. I can't give all the photographers credits here, but they are some creative and talented people. </div>

Where I grew up in Seattle, we had a whole street lined with gorgeous chestnut trees. This was the season to pick up the pods that had split open and gather the nuts. There is a brown hard shell, with the chestnuts inside. Then there is a papery covering. My mother used to roast them over a fire in our fireplace, with little x's carved into the skins just like the photo below. Those would curl up and be easier to peel off. The chestnut inside was so worth the efforts, as they have an amazing buttery goodness!</div>

Well, October 2017 brought snow! That's early even for us. It snowed right on our fall colored trees and bushes. It was so much fun to watch, because they were wet, warm big snow 'bunches' as opposed to snow flakes. Nothing actually stuck, which is why that kind of snow is everyone's favorite.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Other news of interest to my grandsons, is that Papa finally finished his shed, paint and all. He built it from his head and scrap materials, and it turned out so nice and holds lots of storage stuff.</div>

This was a sign that the grandsons gave him, and he's been saving it for just the right time. It now tells everyone who this shed belongs too! Looks great guys.</div>

There is a wonderful sculpture in a park here by the Deschutes River. It is fascinating and so well done. Worth a mention here in my blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHqH-umwKuA2ErPK51TZl-I0_6j6vzTTMqPDW57tUrmmwwZXOYJeT5uNCaYyjgetHz6JuadgUYIkRbiDk_z-fDCHPmOmGiN1qVMePYcM4qGAoFn-fbKdLTGSS3eJd2uZJNSzH6tRp02j7-/s1600/IMG_20170912_184817917_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHqH-umwKuA2ErPK51TZl-I0_6j6vzTTMqPDW57tUrmmwwZXOYJeT5uNCaYyjgetHz6JuadgUYIkRbiDk_z-fDCHPmOmGiN1qVMePYcM4qGAoFn-fbKdLTGSS3eJd2uZJNSzH6tRp02j7-/s320/IMG_20170912_184817917_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is depicting our logging days here in Bend, with a draft horse...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgveu_TM93H_mFRlv4rMe9rE6NN7zDqJEgpqy1hK_5oVIJjTF_wQ9A6J8IEpbPKSd14NuFqioyEOu5a6uIlg291dHhPz3AQFzilFX2uu-MibyULpd4lYDIdfiTh8iLFzf8oBaW5ibPBqStl/s1600/IMG_20170912_184937237_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgveu_TM93H_mFRlv4rMe9rE6NN7zDqJEgpqy1hK_5oVIJjTF_wQ9A6J8IEpbPKSd14NuFqioyEOu5a6uIlg291dHhPz3AQFzilFX2uu-MibyULpd4lYDIdfiTh8iLFzf8oBaW5ibPBqStl/s320/IMG_20170912_184937237_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
pulling two logs behind it. Of course you can see it is made from metal, but what you can't see is that it is all made from old reclaimed metals items from the past.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKF6CwVHrnVjO4kUbxwhyb9L6gxsV02sL055lTtUHvDijY36LyLmU0mAWQcHZvYqAO34xro0emOzhw-9rXcwOgwJO8jhkZvEzcs7LxfxrQasEUtE1ylWqZf7d5oJybV4j_Q65WRp0DO7U8/s1600/IMG_20170912_184901132_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKF6CwVHrnVjO4kUbxwhyb9L6gxsV02sL055lTtUHvDijY36LyLmU0mAWQcHZvYqAO34xro0emOzhw-9rXcwOgwJO8jhkZvEzcs7LxfxrQasEUtE1ylWqZf7d5oJybV4j_Q65WRp0DO7U8/s320/IMG_20170912_184901132_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, you can begin to see some of the things inside the horse...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP8GQktjom0zNFpZjVAIGTKTfoH2r2om-vuBrBkhHKruWlGvGsnhOyUmhoOEpQOs5TTQvhP6-lbTOE2seNFYPyAIfgnYq8GdoCs1Ir48iqzFQ4D63ufNwZ7yHBBbXSRvL7QsHcKDnekr7X/s1600/IMG_20170912_184907693_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP8GQktjom0zNFpZjVAIGTKTfoH2r2om-vuBrBkhHKruWlGvGsnhOyUmhoOEpQOs5TTQvhP6-lbTOE2seNFYPyAIfgnYq8GdoCs1Ir48iqzFQ4D63ufNwZ7yHBBbXSRvL7QsHcKDnekr7X/s320/IMG_20170912_184907693_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and here even more. If you click on the image to expand it you can see even better. There are over 100 items in this horse, most I could recognize and some I still can not. There is a listing on a sign close by that lists the items, and it is really fun to stand here and try to find everything. It is like a puzzle. There is a lot of old farming equipment, saws and wood working tools, but some domestic items too like an old sewing machine and vacuum. The logs behind have the same, their insides filled with other items. There is an old chain saw in there. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What a fascinating sculpture it is, and what a wonderful idea by the artist, Greg Congleton.</div>

I have been reading a book about pharmacists and pharmacy tents in W W II, watching a bit of the documentary on Viet Nam on PBS, watching a movie about the sinking of the Indianapolis in W W II, and then the finding of the ship Indianapolis on PBS. My thoughts have turned to war, a hard topic. So I am going to write down a bit of my rambling thoughts today.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Colors of War</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">The GRAY of rain dripping off the rim of a helmet, rain blocking out the forms of hills, mountains and valleys, rain pouring onto tanks, guns, ship decks and tents, muffling everything and everyone.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The BROWN of mud squelching up over boots of marching soldiers, the sand and rocks of beaches under bombardment and of foot lockers, locked.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The khaki GREEN of uniforms, clean or dirty, the rusted metal of gun turrets, hand grenades whistling silently through the air, gas masks, and sloppy food.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The deep RED of bloody wounds, tongues hanging out of screaming faces, dripping blood, the Red Cross crosses on white tents, and sunsets through the smoke.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The SILVER of heroic medals, of officers stripes, of bullets piercing, of bombs dropping from silver enemy planes, and ocean swells topped with navy cruisers.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The YELLOW of another sunrise, a nurses curls, flashes of lightening, or a stray flower in the dirt and grimy mud.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The BLUE of dress uniforms, ink on endless paperwork, the wink of a blue eye, or the calm in the storm.</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Textures of War</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<ul>
<li style="text-align: left;">The SHARPNESS of shrapnel, the corners of mess trays, of Sargent's barking orders, the edges of torn off limbs, bugle notes piercing the darkness of morning, barbed wire topped walls, and the taste of fear.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The ROUGHNESS of rocks being scaled, of a thin wool blanket, of choppy seas and heaving stomachs, of crawling on bellies in the dirt and flying blind through thunderstorms. </li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The WETNESS of tears, of a puddle in the bottom of a foxhole, the rain drumming on tent tops, wading ashore, and never having dry feet.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The SOFTNESS of a hand clasp or a salute, free moments to write home, sucking mud in the the bottom of trenches, wet clothes, marching through snow and canned green peas.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The CROSS HATCH of confusion, exhaustion, moral turmoils, disrespect, fear, blind orders, singing, comradeship, buddies dying, loyalty, principals and duty.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">The SMOOTHNESS of a flag lifting in a breeze, a swallow of brandy, a team effort, a bomb being released or the arc of a shell in the sky. Smooth decisions handed down from politicians and officers, and smooth words from home to soften hardened hearts.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<br />

Thanks for listening to me release some of my pent up thoughts. Is there any answer to war? Many people much wiser than I have never reached a conclusion. May God have mercy on us.</div>

I have a couple of photo boards around the house and change them up as I have time. This one is right over my dresser, where the insurance man and I see it every day. I thought it would be fun to be seasonal this time, and so I searched for for fall family photos through the years. I am loving it. So fun to see different grand kids at different stages. I think they will have fun seeing it too.</div>
